San Simeone Piccolo

  • Venice sits on dozens of islands in the Venetian Lagoon, at the Adriatic’s northern edge.
  • Coastal Canada has tidal marshes too; Venice’s lagoon works the same way, buffering waves and filtering water.
  • Acqua alta comes from wind-driven tides; when it hits, Piazza San Marco turns into a temporary harbour.
  • Most of Venice’s streets are canals, so transit is by vaporetto and water taxis—no normal road grid.
  • Bet you didn't know: Venice’s larch piles are preserved by brackish, low-oxygen water, so they last for centuries.

Postcard:

Dear Lidia—
In 1947, from the Riva beside Santa Maria della Salute, Venice shines like hammered amber. Tonight the canal bells rang though no boat passed, and a gondolier in a yellow vest slid a sealed envelope under our seat. The wax bore your name, written backwards, as if for someone lost at sea. I followed his gondola into the fog—only the dome of the Salute kept watching. Kiss, Yours, Marco

Haiku:

Golden waves hold sighs,
Stone arches watch the evening,
Venice sighs in gold,
