Learn More about this place

Burano

  • Venice sits in a shallow Adriatic lagoon, built on over 100 islands linked by bridges.
  • Acqua alta is wind-and-tide driven, briefly turning squares into waterfronts, like rare Atlantic storm surges.
  • Cars are banned; canals act as roads, so getting lost feels like navigating river islands in Canada’s camps.
  • Many buildings stand on timber piles; brackish mud helps keep the wood from rotting, even in water.
  • Bet you didn't know: Venice has barene, raised mudflats that grow algae and protect the city during surges.

Postcard:

Dear Lina—
Today in Burano the canal smells of salt and lemon, and my rented boat rocks beside the painted houses. At noon the water turned ink-black, and a silver key floated past my oar—still ticking. The men swore the key belongs to no house, yet every window shutter shut as if listening. I’m sending this before the bell in the alley starts ringing backward. Don’t laugh; the reflection shows us where we haven’t gone.
Yours,
Gianni

Pastel canals breathe,
Oars hush the sunlit water,
Bridges cradle hush,
